Save Our Shire Stanthorpe has responded to the governments call for comment on its local government election discussion paper. http://www.dlgcrr.qld.gov.au

We represent local ratepayers' interests and we have gathered plenty of feedback from locals via our shopfront which operated for over six months in the main street of town.

Our President, Bob Johnson urges the government to make voting at the ballot box the norm and to return democracy to local areas forcibly amalgamated in the past by allowing them to be represented by their own councillors.

These are just two of the recommendations from the Save Our Shire Group which was formed initially to fight the Labor amalgamations and who spearheaded a massive community push against it at the time. The group has now become the principal ratepayers representative group in the Stanthorpe area and is seeking to redress the loss of democratic voice in council which has become increasingly obvious since amalgamation in 2008.
